Tile Flooring Planning

Careful planning of any tiling flooring project is vital so that when we start the project we are able to complete it without interruption. (We can’t control delays due to other tradesman or tile orders that don’t arrive on time). Kitchen tiles and bathroom tiles are often fixed towards the end of a project so liaison with the other trades is vital to keep to the timing plan.
Get it Right from the Start… Avoid Problems Later!
When it comes to wet areas, like showers and bath surrounds and sinks, many tilers install kitchen tiles and bathroom tiles on unsuitable surfaces which swell and decay when exposed to moisture. We regularly find glue has been used instead of the correct cement. It loosens its grip when it gets wet and leads to failure of the entire wall. Bathroom tiles and kitchen tiles need to be installed on the correct surfaces.

We sometimes can replace rotten sections with waterproof materials but usually it is necessary to remove the shower or bath surround and re-work the whole area. Even when cement board is used it is not uncommon – especially for bathroom tiles – for it not to have been properly waterproofed – or do so only partially. Since both tile grout and cement board are porous materials this means water may be constantly leaking back to the wall or partition. This results in the appearance of mould and mildew and subsequently wet-rot if not attended to.

This first appears as black marking in the grout seams, then, as the mould grows from behind the grout and tile start to crack or fall off, as the wet surface behind becomes unstable. Eventually if the issue is not resolved in time, as water gets behind the tile, leaks develop with resulting water damage to quite a large area. This is a common problem with bathroom tiles.

For floors, rather than simply fixing floor tiles to plywood (as is very common), we often first install cement board if required so that the floor tile will rest on a surface that it bonds to well. Many problems with floor tile installations come from a subsurface that has too much movement deflection. Too much movement, over time, can lead to grout failure, tiles coming up and broken tiles. The best way to avoid problems with floor tiles (and especially natural stone such as marble, granite, travertine and slate) is to spend the time and money in advance to make the subfloor rigid, level and flat, without any ridges or dips. DHM Building Maintenance has a wealth of experience to bring to every tiling project and can help deliver the job you want and the quality that will last.
